With funding from The Coca-Cola Foundation, CARE Mozambique continued its support activities for 56 families affected by floods and inundations this Wednesday in Maputo Province, Marracuene district, at the Mumemo 1 Reception Center, distributing hygiene kits and shelter to each family to meet the immediate needs of the flood victims.
The assistance provided to displaced families is the result of a partnership between the Marracuene Municipal Council, The Coca-Cola Foundation, and CARE Mozambique.
During the donation handover, Neyde Pires, Director of Public Relations, Communication and Sustainability at Coca-Cola Sabco Mozambique, began by explaining that unity and cooperation are essential to alleviate the suffering of families and ensure that donations reach those most affected by the floods.
"When Coca-Cola Sabco Mozambique learned about the floods occurring in the country, it began organizing trucks with products produced by the factory to donate in Marracuene, Manhiça, and 3 de Fevereiro. This initiative is part of one of our values, which is to grow together with the communities and show that we are always present, even in devastating situations. We anticipate delivering more donations to the flood victims in Manhiça later this month," explained Neyde Pires.
The head of the Municipal Post Office in the Mumemo neighborhood of Marracuene, Fernando Nhassango, appealed for continued solidarity from companies and citizens to support families affected by the floods that are devastating several regions in Mozambique.
"For us, the help from The Coca-Cola Foundation came at the right time, and we thank everyone who has helped us. At the moment, the situation is under control; in addition to the kits, we have been ensuring food for the people in the tents," he said.
"As we find new land, we are dismantling the tents. Right now, the Municipality has launched a campaign for those people who have space that they are not using, so that we can house these families. Here in Mumemo we have 62 families," added Fernando Nhassango.
In turn, Paula Tocha, project manager for Victim Support at Care Mozambique, said that the institution she represents supports victims in crisis in various ways, but in this case, "it is helping with WASH kits and shelter kits to be able to provide initial support to the victims."
The Care representative explained that the shelter kits consist of tents and essential items for starting a new life, such as pots, plates, cups, spoons, etc. "The Wash kits consist of cleaning products, personal hygiene items, and various utensils. We will support approximately 300 families with tents and approximately 2,350 families with all other items."
For her part, Lércia Silvino Guambe, representing the victims, said: "Receiving the kits is very gratifying, thank you very much, these kits came at the right time, what's inside is exactly what we need, so we are grateful. Our life here before was reasonable. With this support, things will improve because now the kit is individual, and each family will know how to manage their kits. We would also like to continue receiving more support for our children who lost everything," she stated.
