The Italian oil company Eni is evaluating the possibility of proceeding with a third floating liquefaction and natural gas (FLNG) platform in the Rovuma Basin, located in Cabo Delgado province, in northern Mozambique.
The information was released by the president of Coral FLNG and CEO of Eni Rovuma Basin, Marica Calabrese, during an oil and gas conference held in Maputo. According to her, the enormous gas reserves in the Rovuma Basin allow the country to continue attracting significant investments in the energy sector.
According to Eni, the potential new project follows the success achieved by Coral Sul FLNG, a platform that began production in 2022 and has already produced millions of tons of liquefied natural gas. The company believes that the project's operational and financial results demonstrate Mozambique's potential in the international energy market.
However, the oil company is already developing the Coral Norte FLNG, whose production is expected to start in 2028. The new platform will have greater production capacity and should contribute significantly to increasing Mozambican exports of liquefied natural gas.
In addition to the economic impact, Eni expects to create job opportunities for thousands of Mozambicans and strengthen the participation of national companies in contracts related to the oil and gas sector. The company also states that it has been promoting capacity-building initiatives to prepare the local market to meet the demands of the international energy industry.
According to Marica Calabrese, the main challenge for Mozambican companies lies in competitiveness, arguing that national companies must prepare to compete not only with multinational companies present in Mozambique, but also in international markets.
