Waste Management in Mulotana: A Collective Challenge between Urban Growth and Environmental Risks

The district of Mulotana has grown rapidly, both day and night, with residents coming from diverse regions, which is reflected in the diversity of daily habits and practices. However, a common problem unites these different realities: the inadequate disposal of solid waste. Most residents resort to dumping their garbage in the Matola River, a practice that, in addition to polluting the waterway, has direct negative impacts, especially during the rainy season.

According to one of the residents who spoke to Preto & Branco, “Let's avoid this type of practice; nobody likes to live with garbage, much less other people's garbage. Therefore, I recommend that everyone take care of the garbage they produce in their yard or identify a public garbage can for that purpose. Let's treat each other with respect, avoiding doing to others what we don't want done to us.”

On the other hand, another resident expressed concern about the effects of this practice on public health, lamenting that "the rainy season, combined with the accumulation of garbage, has the power to fuel diseases, such as cholera."

Given this scenario, it is urgent to adopt risk mitigation measures that involve not only raising community awareness but also the intervention of local authorities. The creation of waste collection points, environmental education campaigns, and regular maintenance of public areas are essential steps to transform Mulotana into a cleaner, safer, and healthier district for all.
