Tropical Storm Gezani, which is moving through the Indian Ocean, could intensify into a cyclone and affect Mozambican territory from February 12th, according to a warning from the National Institute of Meteorology. The provinces of Sofala, Inhambane and Gaza are among the areas at greatest risk.
Moderate Tropical Storm Gezani poses a growing threat to Mozambique. According to the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM), the system, which is active in the southwestern basin of the Indian Ocean, has the potential to evolve into a Tropical Cyclone in the coming days.
Currently, the system is located at 17.8 degrees South latitude and 54.8 degrees East longitude. With average winds of 75 km/h and gusts that can reach 100 km/h, it is moving southwest at about 15 km/h. Projections indicate that the storm may enter the Mozambique Channel still in this category, but with a tendency to intensify.
If it maintains its trajectory, the system could approach the Mozambican coast as a cyclone, representing a significant risk. The provinces of Sofala, Inhambane, and Gaza are identified as potentially the most affected. In these regions, very strong winds are expected, with averages of up to 120 km/h and gusts of around 140 km/h, accompanied by heavy rains.
These extreme weather conditions are capable of causing flooding, damage to infrastructure, power outages, and difficulties in road traffic. Faced with this threat, INAM (National Institute of Meteorology) emphasizes that the evolution of the system remains under continuous monitoring, given that changes in intensity and trajectory are common.
Therefore, the institution appeals to the population, especially those in coastal and low-lying areas, to closely monitor weather reports and official warnings. Authorities recommend adopting preventative measures, such as reinforcing vulnerable housing, safeguarding essential goods, and strictly adhering to civil protection guidelines, with the aim of reducing risks and protecting human lives.
INAM assures that it will continue to provide updated information on the evolution of Storm Gezani, as new data is collected and analyzed.
