Transport strike at Matola train station affects thousands; CFM alleviates crisis with train services

Following the strike by passenger transport operators at Matola Gare, transportation this morning became extremely complicated. However, the services of the giant Mozambique Railways (CFM) demonstrated their resilience, minimizing the suffering of people and goods coming from that point in the city of Matola.

The regular bus service, which charges 13 meticais, exceeded its regular capacity due to high demand. With no alternatives, many passengers resorted to the services of the railcar, considered an elite mode of transport. This situation highlights the mobility crisis that has befallen the region.

The problem is exacerbated in a context where the National Roads Administration (ANE) laments the lack of financial capacity to start the road rehabilitation works. At the same time, drivers complain about the high costs of regular vehicle maintenance, which increasingly undermines their profitability.

Matola Gare, located 27 km from the city of Maputo, has experienced significant urban growth in recent years. Most residents attend school and/or work in the capital. During this period of lockdown, the train has become the only viable option for many, confirming the proverb: "If the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail."

The massive reliance on trains underscores the vulnerability of the transport system and the urgent need for structural solutions for the rail network and the sector.
