The population of the Mocuba district, in Zambézia province, is threatening to halt the start of construction on the new bridge over the Licungo River if the resettlement agreements defined with the Government, within the framework of the project financed by Compact II of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, are not fulfilled.
The main concern relates to the distance of approximately 15 kilometers between the new resettlement area and essential social infrastructure, such as schools, health units, and markets, a scenario that, according to residents, could worsen living conditions and hinder access to basic services.
Residents also denounce the failure to fulfill promises made during the first round of public consultations, alleging that several of their concerns were not considered by the authorities, which increases the climate of distrust and dissatisfaction.
If the demands are not met, the population promises to boycott the start of the project, estimated at around 500 million dollars. The project is expected to affect approximately 524 families on both banks of the Licungo River, raising the need for sustainable and dignified solutions for those resettled.
During the meeting, the Minister of Planning and Development, Salimo Valá, argued that the process must guarantee social justice and respect for the real conditions of families, ensuring that development does not compromise the livelihoods of communities.
The construction of the bridge and the Mocuba Ring Road is seen by the Government as strategic for boosting the national economy, facilitating the flow of agricultural production and improving connections to markets.
