New movements and incursions by terrorist groups recorded in recent days in the Nangade district, in Cabo Delgado province, have once again caused instability and the forced displacement of populations. At least 776 people, including men, women and children, have been forced to abandon their homes in search of safety.
According to the latest report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the displaced people are mostly from the villages of Machava, Samora Machel, Muangaza and Nkonga, areas that have been the target of recurring threats and armed incursions.
The document, which covers the period from April 17 to 25, indicates that many families fled suddenly, leaving behind essential goods and means of subsistence, such as stored food and agricultural fields. Some of the displaced sought refuge in the town of Mualela, while others dispersed to different points in the district, depending on security conditions and the availability of support.
Local reports indicate that last week, terrorist groups were observed operating in the fields of the village of Lijungo and in the low-lying areas of the Nkonga community. There are indications of looting of food and other goods, further exacerbating the vulnerability of the affected populations, who are already facing difficulties in accessing basic resources.
Although no recent episodes of direct violence against civilians have been reported in these specific incursions, the climate of fear and uncertainty remains high, leading many families to preemptively abandon their homes.
The humanitarian situation in the region continues to be a cause for concern, as the increasing number of displaced people puts additional pressure on host communities and available resources, including shelter, drinking water, food, and medical assistance.
It is important to recall that, in recent weeks, there has been a resurgence of insurgent groups in various areas of the Nangade district. In response, the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces are maintaining operations on the ground, also counting on the support of Tanzanian armed forces, within the framework of bilateral cooperation to combat terrorism and strengthen security in the region.
The authorities continue to monitor the situation, appealing for calm among the population and reinforcing the need for collaboration between local communities and security forces, with a view to restoring stability and protecting civilian populations.
