Portuguese-Mozambican coach renews contract with Ghana and sets his sights on the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations

Carlos Queiroz will continue as manager of the Ghana national team. The confirmation came this week after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sport and Recreation reached an agreement to renew the contract of the Portuguese-Mozambican coach.

The decision comes shortly after Ghana's participation in the 2026 World Cup, where the team was eliminated in the round of 16 by Colombia 1-0. Despite the early departure, the experience gained and knowledge of the squad weighed in favor of the 73-year-old coach, who had already left a farewell message, describing his time there as an "honor and privilege".

Now, Queiroz will have a new mission: to qualify the "Black Stars" for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The first major test will take place in the next international window, between September 21 and October 6, with two matches against Ivory Coast — one at home and one away.

In a statement, GFA justified its decision to retain the Portuguese coach: "We believe that his international experience and the knowledge he has acquired about the 'Black Stars' put him in a strong position to lead this new cycle."

Initially hired in April for a short-term mission, Carlos Queiroz ended up winning the trust of Ghanaian sports authorities. Now, with a renewed contract, the former assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson is preparing to write another chapter in the history of African football.
