Boane, Maputo Province, three 11-year-old children, living in the same neighborhood, mysteriously disappeared after leaving home for school on Tuesday morning. They have not returned home since then, and their families are deeply worried.
The three girls, who were classmates and neighbors, left their homes at around 6:30 a.m., as usual, expecting a normal day of school. However, what should have been a routine school day turned into an alarming situation. As the day progressed and the children did not show up, the parents began to feel the anguish of uncertainty. At the end of the afternoon, realizing the gravity of the situation, the families began to search the surrounding area and notify the local authorities.
The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) quickly mobilized a team to investigate the disappearance. Authorities began gathering information from the community, interviewing neighbors and friends of the children. In addition, police are monitoring nearby areas, including parks and recreational areas, where the children may have gone. Authorities are also analyzing security camera footage from the area in the hope of obtaining clues as to the girls’ whereabouts.
The Boane community has come together during this difficult time. Neighbours and volunteers have come together to organise group searches, combing streets, vacant lots and public spaces. Social media has played a crucial role in spreading information. The solidarity among community members has been remarkable, with many offering emotional and logistical support to the families of the missing children.
This incident occurs in a worrying context in Mozambique, where the issue of missing persons has become a recurring theme. According to the Missing Persons Support Fund, 159 people disappeared in the country in 2023, with 13 remaining missing by the end of the year. The increase in cases of disappearances, especially of children, has generated a state of alert among the authorities and civil society. The causes of disappearances often remain uncertain, ranging from escapes to kidnapping, which intensifies the concern of families and the community.
Authorities are appealing to the public to immediately report any relevant information to the PRM or emergency services. It is essential that everyone remains alert and cooperative, as even the smallest piece of information can be crucial in finding the missing children. Community unity and collaboration with the authorities are essential at this critical time, and it is hoped that vigilance and solidarity can help bring the girls back home safely.
