The southern region of Mozambique, particularly the provinces of Gaza, Maputo, and Matola, has been experiencing heavy rains since last Sunday, January 11th. The rainfall has caused flooding and inundations in various infrastructures, leaving several districts and neighborhoods with restricted access.
Among the affected locations are sports venues, such as the Costa do Sol Sports Club field, which was once again completely flooded. This situation is recurring: whenever it rains heavily, the field of the well-known "matchiki-tchiki" becomes flooded. A similar scenario occurred during the major floods of 2000, when the area was submerged by a mixture of sand, water, and solid waste.
As is typical during each rainy season, images published by the newspaper Domingo on social media show the stadium transformed into a lake, a consequence of the persistent rains that have lasted for about a week. The chronic problem of drainage and runoff of rainwater at this sports venue repeats itself annually, resulting in the scenes now widely shared.
However, the effects of these floods are not expected to affect professional football practice in the area, as national competitions – namely the Moçambola, the Mozambique Cup and the Maputo City Championship – are currently in their off-season.
