The man suspected of brutally murdering his cousin, identified as Peter, 39, in the early hours of last Sunday in the Maxaquene neighborhood of Maputo city, has been arrested. The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) confirmed the arrest, while the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) collected as evidence a machete with traces of blood, found in the backyard of the residence where the crime occurred.
According to family members, the suspect, known as "Father," was seen the day before sharpening his machete while making threats: "He clearly said he wanted blood," reported Paula Miguel, the victim's sister. That same night, he also allegedly threatened his partner, sparking a heated argument.
The possibility of the suspect being sent for psychiatric treatment is causing outrage in the victim's family. "This upsets us because he could escape and kill again. We want justice. If I have to end my friendship with his mother because of this, so be it," Paula declared.
Several family members share the same fears and describe the man as a threat to the community. They mention a history of violent behavior, including jailbreaks, even while handcuffed, as well as links to theft and assault.
The block leader, who closely followed the case, confirmed the suspect's troubled past. "He jumped walls, climbed onto rooftops, stole, and assaulted people. I had already kicked him out, but his family begged for mercy. Now he's ruined everything. If he comes back, we'll take action. We can't live in fear," she stated.
The community leader, who has already lost a son to crime, also assured that, if the suspect is released, she will file a complaint with the Attorney General's Office (PGR).
According to witnesses, after the crime, the suspect attempted to cover up the remains by sweeping the area around two in the morning. Peter's body was apparently partially burned. SERNIC confirmed that the machete found was used in the murder.
In addition to the pain of their loss, the family is now facing difficulties in organizing the funeral. They added that they have received no support from the suspect's family. The alleged murderer's mother reportedly only promised to bring church members to a prayer service.
In a climate of dismay and insecurity, the victim's family is calling for a firm response from the authorities. The suspect's possible transfer to a psychiatric unit is seen as a risk to the community.
While the legal proceedings continue, family members are seeking the limited resources available to ensure a dignified burial for Peter. The community, for its part, eagerly awaits the outcome of a case that shocked Maxaquene and reignites the debate on safety, justice, and criminal accountability.
