In the business landscape of Nampula, Suraia, a 31-year-old with a degree in Accounting and Auditing, shares a story that is, above all, about resilience and discovery. Determined, she enrolled in a specialized gardening training course at Malachi Gardens in Maputo and launched herself into the market. Gardening has always been a therapy for a difficult time. She is a passionate advocate for the power of natural flowers. The therapeutic aspect that gave rise to the business remains in her discourse. "Plants are therapy. Some aromas bring tranquility, others purify the air, and some believe that certain species attract luck and protection."
"Each plant has a meaning and transforms the energy of the environment," she reflects, showing that her work goes beyond the commercial; it's a service to well-being. "Flowers have their own language, transmitted through colors," she explains. "Red roses speak of intense love, yellow ones of hope and gratitude, and other shades symbolize friendship and affection. Whoever wants to convey a feeling should choose the color with meaning." This technical and sentimental knowledge is one of the pillars of her service.
From Hobby to Business: Building a Brand
In Nampula, where the availability of flower shops is still scarce, Suraia, 31, found the decisive step towards entrepreneurship when friends and acquaintances, enchanted by the results of her care, began requesting plants from her. "I realized there was a shared passion and a demand. I asked myself: 'Why not turn this into a business?'" she recalls. Initially, sales were made from home. What began as a healing hobby transformed into a thriving business. "Caring for flowers started as a therapeutic hobby, a refuge where I dedicated a large part of my time. It all began during a difficult time in my life," she reveals. However, the growth was organic and consistent, leading to the opening of her own physical store.
Currently at the helm of GC Garden, she has charted an unexpected and colorful course. The store is already fully prepared to surprise. "We've already ordered stock and prepared a special catalog with many options," she says. The offering is vast and designed for memorable experiences: from traditional and elegant floral arrangements to room decorations, romantic breakfast trays, gift boxes, and chocolates. "Demand is increasing exponentially, and we have to be prepared to meet that demand," she states enthusiastically.
One of the main challenges she faces is the local culture. "In Nampula, there are still few flower shops and, due to the perception of durability, many still opt for artificial roses," she comments. To differentiate herself, Suraia didn't limit herself to selling plants; she added services such as personalized floral arrangements and car decoration, diversifying her offerings and creating experiences for customers. Her work has been precisely to educate and raise awareness in the market. And the results are beginning to appear: "Taking stock, I see that the message is reaching people. Little by little, they are adopting the practice of giving natural flowers."
Focus on Valentine's Day for surprises for lovers.
GC Garden is preparing to enchant lovers on Valentine's Day with arrangements, experiences, and meanings that go far beyond the petals. With February 14th approaching, Suraia and GC Garden are preparing for what she considers "the best time" of the year. For Suraia, the report concludes with an invitation and a promise. "We are already managing orders to ensure everything runs perfectly," she emphasizes. "Our main objective is to provide quality services, always exceeding our clients' expectations," she concludes. Her journey is inspiring: it proves that it's possible to transform a personal passion and a challenging moment into a successful business, cultivating not only flowers but also relationships and emotions in the city of Nampula.
