Mozambique, February 5, 2026 – Paulo Varela is the new General Manager of Puma Energy for Mozambique, an appointment that marks the company's commitment to sustainable growth and alignment with the country's energy transition in an accelerating regional market.
Puma Energy announced this Thursday the appointment of Paulo Varela as General Manager for Mozambique. This leadership change reflects the company's strategy to consolidate and expand its presence in one of Africa's most dynamic energy markets.
The decision was highlighted by Ben Ouattara, Puma Energy's Director for Africa, who stated: "Paulo Varela's appointment reflects our strong commitment to the continent's energy future and our confidence in Mozambique's potential. Under his guidance, we will continue to collaborate with partners and stakeholders to drive strategic investments and serve Mozambican communities."
With an international career spanning over 25 years in the energy, infrastructure, and telecommunications sectors, including experience in markets in East Africa, Europe, and Latin America, Paulo Varela brings comprehensive knowledge of the sector. The executive leaves his position as CEO of Galp Mozambique to take on this new challenge.
"It is with great enthusiasm that I join Puma Energy, a leading company in the energy sector in Sub-Saharan Africa and Mozambique. I look forward to working with the team to ensure reliable energy and innovative solutions that benefit our customers and the communities where we operate," declared Paulo Varela.
Puma Energy's operations in the country include a network of 35 service stations, 18 convenience stores, and a presence in 8 airports, through which it supplies fuels, lubricants, and specialized services to aviation and commercial clients.
This appointment comes at a strategic moment for the sector. The new leadership is expected to guide the company in aligning with Mozambique's ambitious Energy Transition Strategy (ETS), which aims for universal access to energy by 2030 and diversification towards renewable sources such as solar and wind.
In this way, Puma Energy reinforces not only its management structure, but also its ambition to play a central role in the transformation of the energy sector and the economic development of Mozambique, ensuring long-term investments in an evolving landscape.
