President Chapo scales (the diplomacy in) Brussels

In Brussels, President Daniel Chapo is balancing the delicate art of diplomacy: while negotiating new support packages for Mozambique with the European Union, he is also grappling with the impasse of the suspended funding for Rwandan forces deployed in Cabo Delgado. In a meeting marked by close ties with the Mozambican community in the BENELUX region, the Head of State listened to concerns, reaffirmed commitments, and attempted to transform the diaspora into a bridge for development, at a critical moment for national security and the economy.

The President of the Republic, Daniel Francisco Chapo, chose Brussels as the stage for a dual mission: to guarantee the strengthening of European cooperation and to strengthen ties with Mozambicans living in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. The meeting with the diaspora, part of his official visit to the European Union, served to listen to the concerns of those living far from home, but also to send a clear message that the government is committed to turning the page on instability and mistrust.

During the dialogue, the Head of State did not hide the challenges, but preferred to focus on the opportunities. In a context where the EU funding agreement for Rwandan forces—allies in the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado—faces obstacles, Chapo highlighted the vital importance of the partnership with the European bloc. More than military security, the President stressed the need to attract investments that generate employment and development for the northern province, devastated by years of conflict.

Meanwhile, the leader addressed ongoing reforms to improve the business environment and combat corruption, signaling to European investors and the diaspora that Mozambique is creating conditions for more sustainable and transparent growth.

Finally, Chapo addressed Mozambicans in the BENELUX countries directly, acknowledging the bureaucratic difficulties and distance they face, but reiterating that their contribution—whether in remittances, knowledge, or influence—is an undeniable asset for the nation's future. In this way, the President attempts to transform the diaspora from mere spectators into protagonists of development, at a time when the country most needs solid bridges with the world.
