Maputo is hosting, this Monday, the launch of the Annual Barometer on the State of Women in Mozambique, an initiative of the Women's Observatory. The event, which brought together partners, intervention districts and national entities, marked the high point of an extensive process of analyzing the situation of women in the country.
The opening session was led by Quitéria Guirengane, Executive Secretary of the organization, who began by thanking the cooperation partners for their fundamental support, namely the Swedish Embassy, CESC Allies with Funding from Canada, and OXFAM. "This moment is the culmination of a long review process," stated Guirengane, explaining that the barometer serves as "an instrument to measure the temperature of women" in Mozambique.
Among the personalities present, the participation of Her Excellency, Ivete Alane, Minister of Labor, Gender and Social Action, stood out, highlighting the importance of dialogue between civil society and the government.
One of the highlights of the ceremony was the special participation of Brazilian expert Beatriz Jaciolo, PhD in gender-based political violence and global intersex articulation. Her presence was justified by Brazil's vast experience in confronting violence, with Jaciolo having led the creation of the national violence map in the Brazilian Senate. "She led the establishment of the national violence map in Brazil and a series of data production initiatives that guide the creation of laws and policies," said Quitéria Guirengane, thanking her for sharing her knowledge.
Beyond the presentation of data, the event was also marked by a moment of celebration and recognition. The Women's Observatory instituted, for the first time, three annual awards aimed at encouraging efforts towards gender equality. The award categories were: "Champion of Resistance", "Fearless Journalist" and "Responsible Magistrate".
In summary, the launch of the barometer not only provided an up-to-date snapshot of the condition of Mozambican women, but also strengthened bridges of international cooperation and inaugurated a mechanism for recognizing those who stand out in promoting women's rights in the country.
