Municipality seeks alternative waste management

Since national independence, the city of Maputo has been vulnerable in the treatment of solid waste, because it only has possible garbage destinations, where collectors have direct contact with garbage, this practice undermines the well-being of the city.

In the urban setting of Maputo, solid waste management has become a critical issue that affects not only public health, but also the environment and the quality of life of citizens.

Recently, Rasaque Manhique, President of the Municipal Council, expressed concerns about the progress of the construction of the Katembe landfill, requesting flexibility and a reduction in the timeframes involved in the process. This demand reflects the urgency of the situation and the need for swift action by the authorities.

Maputo, like many other developing cities, faces significant challenges in waste management. With a steadily growing population, waste production increases daily. Key challenges include:

- Inadequate infrastructure: Many areas of the city lack an efficient waste collection and disposal system.

- Environmental pollution: The accumulation of untreated waste contributes to soil and water contamination, affecting the health of the population.

- Lack of awareness: It is crucial to educate the population about the importance of waste separation and proper disposal.

The construction of the Katembe landfill is a response to these challenges, as it aims to provide a sustainable solution for waste disposal, relieving pressure on urban areas.

In his statement, Rasaque Manhique highlighted that excessive bureaucracy has been a significant obstacle to the progress of the works. He called on the competent authorities to review administrative procedures, seeking ways to:

- Simplify processes: Eliminate unnecessary steps that delay project execution.

- Accelerate approvals: Ensure that necessary licenses and permits are granted more quickly.

- Foster partnerships: Encourage collaboration between the public and private sectors to mobilize resources.

According to Manhique, agility in executing the project is essential not only for the immediate well-being of the population, but also for the long-term sustainability of the city.

The construction of the Katembe landfill brings a series of significant benefits:

- Improved public health: An adequate waste management system reduces the incidence of waste-related diseases and other infections.

- Job creation: The construction and operation of the landfill can generate hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, contributing to local economic development.

- Environmental protection: A modern landfill can include technologies that minimize environmental impact, such as leachate treatment systems and gas capture.

In addition to developing the necessary infrastructure, it is essential to promote an awareness campaign among the population of Maputo. Education about waste separation and the importance of recycling can help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and promote a culture of sustainability.

Rasaque Manhique’s call for flexibility and shorter deadlines is a crucial step towards addressing Maputo’s waste management challenges. With the collaboration of all stakeholders, including government, the private sector and the community, it is possible to transform the city into an example of sustainable and innovative management. The construction of the Katembe landfill is an opportunity not only to solve immediate problems, but also to establish a legacy of environmental responsibility and public health for future generations.
