Mozambique: Number of detainees in post-election protests drops

The civil society organization DECIDE confirmed the release yesterday afternoon of nine more citizens who were unjustly detained in connection with the post-election demonstrations. These protests have been taking place since October 2024, that is, for more than a year, in the city of Beira.

It is worth highlighting that Beira has been one of the cities with the highest rates of arrests related to these protests. The demonstrators faced accusations of rioting, theft, and other offenses, but investigations failed to prove the existence of evidence for such crimes.

It is important to remember that, in total, 7,200 people were arrested in connection with these demonstrations. Currently, the number of citizens still incarcerated has decreased to 2,742.

DECIDE emphasizes that, until a pardon is granted for all cases, it will continue to closely monitor the situation of each detainee. The organization also extends special thanks to Dr. Gilete for the dedication and commitment shown throughout this very important process, it was quoting.
