Limpopo River above alert level: ARA-Sul warns of risk of flooding

The southern region of the country has registered a hydrological situation of concern in the last 24 hours, with the Limpopo River, in Sicacate and Combomune, showing levels above the alert due to upstream flows, while the remaining basins maintain a downward trend.

The Southern Regional Water Administration (ARA-Sul, IP) released the latest hydrological bulletin for the southern region of the country, indicating that, although there has been no rainfall recorded in the last 24 hours in the local rain gauge network, the Limpopo basin, specifically in Sicacate and Combomune, presents hydrometric levels above the alert level.

According to ARA-Sul, this rise results from runoff originating from upstream regions. On the other hand, the remaining river basins in the southern region are experiencing fluctuations in levels, with a general downward trend, remaining below the alert level.

Regarding the filling of the main reservoirs, the most recent data reveals that:

- The BPL dam is operating at 98.93% of its capacity, registering an inflow of 25.69 m³/s and a discharge of 15.18 m³/s.

- The Corumana reservoir is 87.72% full, with an inflow of 52.28 m³/s and an outflow of 28.69 m³/s.

- Massingir, in turn, is at 73.72% of its capacity, with an inflow of 345.55 m³/s and a discharge of 351.43 m³/s.

For the next 48 hours, ARA-Sul predicts that, given the weather forecasts and the prevailing hydrological situation, no significant changes are expected in the current hydrological scenario.

Finally, ARA-Sul, IP, appeals to the public to take precautionary measures when going to the Limpopo and Inhanombe rivers, as they risk being swept away by the force of the water. Likewise, it recommends constantly monitoring the hydrological information disseminated by the competent authorities.
