The Assembly of the Republic meets this Wednesday in plenary session to discuss the legislative package for the media sector, which has been shelved for over a decade. This includes the Media Law Project, which replaces the Press Law (in force for almost 35 years), and the Broadcasting Law and the Higher Council for Social Communication, two new legal instruments for the sector.
The fact was announced yesterday by the Press Office of the Assembly of the Republic, which, however, did not share the respective draft laws. In fact, until this Tuesday, the media legislation package was under debate between members of the specialized committees and civic organizations defending freedom of the press and expression.
It should be noted that the discussion of the media legislation package returned to the country's political agenda in August 2025, when the Government, through the Information Office (GABINFO), launched a public consultation with journalists as part of the drafting of the media and broadcasting laws. The process, which covered the entire national territory, lasted 15 days and involved the collaboration of MISA-Mozambique, the National Union of Journalists, and the Higher Council for Social Communication.
