Mozambican musician JL has just released his latest single, "Vuka Africa" – Wake Up Africa, a powerful and moving ode to the African continent. The song is more than just a song—it's a call for renewal, collective consciousness, and the recovery of African dignity, evoking cultural and historical roots as the foundation for a future of personal and collective growth.
Performed in the AfroJazz style, "Vuka Africa" combines sophisticated and profoundly African sounds. The arrangements feature saxophone, drums, guitars (bass and lead), and striking percussion, which intertwine as if taking a subtle journey through the continent's diverse rhythms. JL's firm and emotional voice blends harmoniously with the female choir, which, in a tone simultaneously sweet and imperative, calls upon "Mother Africa" to awaken—in a chant that sounds both like a plea and a protest.
Born in Pemba, raised in Xai-Xai, with time spent abroad, and now residing in Maputo, JL represents a class of artists who balance multiple facets of life. A civil engineer, environmental engineer, and business manager by training, JL has a long-standing passion for music, which has been evident since childhood. Winner of his first singing competition at age 12, he is now a composer and performer who sings in Portuguese, English, Xichangana/XiChope, and French.
In terms of releases, the artist has already released songs such as "SOS," "Lamento," and "Amor de Mãe," and now "Vuka Africa"—a track that stands out not only for its musical quality, but for the depth of its message. It's an invitation to reflection, to the unity of the African people, and to resistance, reaffirming the urgent need for the continent to rebuild itself based on its own history and identity.
"Vuka Africa" is available on major national and international streaming platforms through MODIGI, a strategy that aims not only to reach the Mozambican public but also to explore new market niches abroad, bringing the message of contemporary African music to other geographies and audiences.
With this release, JL consolidates himself as one of the most relevant contemporary voices in protest music in Mozambique and Africa, transporting the listener to a universe where sound is struggle, memory and hope.
