INAM Predicts Gusts of Up to 70 km/h in Southern Mozambique

The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) has issued an important alert for the population of the southern region of Mozambique, predicting the occurrence of strong winds with gusts that can reach up to 70 kilometers per hour. This meteorological phenomenon is scheduled to occur from the afternoon of Wednesday, May 21, and will last until May 22. Strong winds will affect several districts in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane. The warning includes: ● Maputo Province: Matutuine, Namaacha, Boane, Moamba, Magude, Manhiça, Marracuene, cities of Maputo and Matola. ● Gaza Province: Massingir, Chókwe, Chonguene, Bilene, Limpopo, Mandlakazi, Chicualacuala, Mapai, Massangena, Mabalane, Chigubo, Chibuto, Guijá, Chongoene and the city of Xai-Xai. ● Province of Inhambane: Zavala, Inharrime and Panda. In addition to the strong winds, INAM also warned of rough seas, with waves that could reach heights of up to 5 meters south of the parallel 24 degrees south. This phenomenon represents a significant risk to navigation and fishing activities in the region. Given the forecast of strong winds and rough seas, INAM recommends that the population take precautionary and safety measures. Some of the guidelines include: ● Avoid outdoor activities, especially in areas vulnerable to falling trees and structures. ● Strengthen the security of properties and vehicles, ensuring that loose objects cannot be blown away by the wind. ● Keep informed about weather conditions by following official INAM communications. Strong winds can cause significant damage, including falling trees, power outages and damage to buildings. The community must therefore be vigilant and ready to act quickly in case of emergencies. INAM’s forecast for strong winds in the southern region of the country is a reminder of the importance of being prepared for natural phenomena. Collaboration between meteorological authorities and the population is crucial to minimize impacts and ensure everyone’s safety. Following INAM’s updates and following safety recommendations is essential to face this climate challenge.
