In Mozambique, where we are equal before the law, this is Utopia” warns Researcher Baltazar Fael

As part of the end-of-year assessment of 2024, the civil society analyst considers that we are all blamed for the loss of human lives, regardless of party or religious affiliation, for all those who lost their lives in the context of the demonstrations and popular uprising in Mozambique. The entire society must be held responsible, since something could have been done to avoid or minimize the situation, whether by the legislature, the courts or the successive governments of the Frelimo party. Perhaps they should have had a governance agenda that, after fifty years in power, we could have a more robust and incisive governance. Everyone should nottheAs Mozambicans we should feel guilty for the tragedy, each one of us should have contributed, there are no innocents here, we are all builders of this society so that it could be better and that if humanized.

The Researcher at the Center for Public Integrity (CIP),Baltazar Fael, in the context of the national magazine on TV Sucesso, said that all the government’s achievements end up being clearly overshadowed by so many deaths and destruction. What marked the year 2024 was the electoral process in Mozambique, but not specifically on October 9, the day of the vote. If we look back at the beginning of the election campaign, preparations, etc., the country has almost come to a standstill, and there is a reason for all this. From 2023 onwards, things started to change, and the civic action of Mozambicans began to gain momentum, while the government remained aloof. It was fair to start preparing for this moment. There have been signs since last year, and today these signs are materializing with what we are seeing. Everything the government has done has been overshadowed by destruction and deaths. But what clearly marks the year 2024, this cycle of governance, is President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, who was the tragedy the country is experiencing today. Everything the government tried to build has been destroyed. It is time for everyone to ask themselves what kind of country we want. This is not just an action for those in government, but also for those aspiring to govern, because we do not know where this will end. Of course, we always have a government led by Frelimo in Mozambique. We have a president who was nominated “and not elected” by the CNE. This president has to find a way to bring all Mozambicans together. I don’t know if the solution for this country would be a government of National Unity, I don’t know if the solution for this country is for Frelimo to govern, I don’t know if the solution for this country is for Podemos to govern, but I’m sure that everyone sees themselves in sharing the resources. Note that in this country some feel more like owners than others, that we are equal before the law, this is just a formal issue, in reality it is not.
