Imminent criminal risks at Montepuez Ruby Mining

The arrival of foreigners and migrants from other provinces, many in an illegal situation, is putting significant pressure on the way of life of the communities of Montepuez. But how does this criminal machine work? Since 2019, MRM has been conducting investigations that reveal a well-structured and professional scheme. The illegal ruby mining syndicates are financed, operated, and profited from, mostly, by foreigners. The hierarchy of the crime is clear:

In practice, this becomes a vicious cycle of debt. The recruiters' strategy is perverse and calculated. For those who have no money, the unions offer a "loan" to cover transportation, food, and lodging, a debt that must be repaid with the proceeds from mining.

Illegal miners are assigned to mines, living in abject and highly unsafe conditions, receiving only tools, food, and water. The precious stones found must be sold to the "sponsoring" syndicate for a price far below their real value. The miner receives only a fraction, remaining perpetually indebted and without money to leave. "As a result, these illegal miners – a growing number of whom are minors – are effectively trapped in modern slavery," denounces MRM.

The problem transcends the boundaries of mining. MRM warns of the growing pressure these networks exert on the social fabric of local communities, contributing to increased drug use and other criminal activities.

Given this scenario, MRM is conducting awareness campaigns in neighboring communities about the dangers of illegal mining. However, the company has already brought these worrying trends to the attention of district, provincial, and national authorities.

The appeal is clear: more proactive measures are expected against the real criminals—those who finance, facilitate, and encourage the illegal trade in Mozambican rubies.

- Financiers and buyers: Thai, Sri Lankan and Burmese.

- Recruiters and logistics personnel: Nigerians, Malians, Burundians, Congolese, Tanzanians, Senegalese, and Ecuadorians.

- Operational/invaders: Mozambicans and Tanzanians.

This means that, unlike adults, they do not run the risk of being arrested or detained.
