Maputo will host a seminar on April 28th that will address one of the most sensitive challenges of development in Mozambique: how to reconcile mega-mining, energy and infrastructure projects with the protection of displaced communities — this is the central theme of the debate promoted by the Faculty of Law of UEM and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
The event is scheduled to take place at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Maputo, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. According to the organizers, the seminar arises in a context where involuntary resettlement has posed significant challenges to guaranteeing fundamental rights. Among these, the most important are access to land, decent housing, the preservation of livelihoods, and the cultural integrity of the affected populations.
Therefore, the meeting's central objective is to promote a technical analysis.-juritip criethics. More specifically, it aims to evaluate the effectivenessthecia of protection mechanismshereHey, lookheresafeguarding the communities affected by resettlement processes in Mozambique. To support this debate, the most recent international instruments will be invoked, namely the UN Guiding Principles on Resettlement (Human Rights Council Resolution 55/11).
It is worth remembering that the seminar is a joint initiative of the OHCHR and the Human Rights Center of the UEM Law School. Therefore, it integrates broader efforts to promote the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs). In short, the event is not limited to diagnosing problems—it seeks, above all, to build bridges between law, businesses, and communities.
