Resident doctors at Maputo Central Hospital (HCM) are on alert after deciding to suspend their activities outside of office hours, starting on June 1st and for an indefinite period. This action is a direct response to a series of unsatisfactory conditions that have been dragging on for a significant period, affecting both the well-being of professionals and the quality of patient care.
The decision to halt activities was motivated by two main factors:
1. Working Conditions: Physicians have reported a challenging work environment characterized by a lack of essential resources, inadequate equipment, and poor infrastructure. This not only compromises the efficiency of care delivery but also generates considerable stress among healthcare professionals.
2. Delays in Payments: Another crucial issue that will lead to a shutdown is the issue of delays in the payment of overtime. Many residents dedicate additional hours to care without due financial compensation, which generates financial instability and discontent among professionals.
The interruption of activities can have several negative repercussions:
Patients who rely on HCM medical services may experience significant delays in the delivery of care, especially in critical areas.
Those who continue to work during the shutdown may face an even heavier workload, which can result in burnout and additional stress.
The resident doctors are requesting an urgent meeting with the hospital administration and representatives of the Ministry of Health. The aim is to discuss the issues raised and seek solutions that could lead to improved working conditions and regularization of payments. The hope is that through dialogue, a path can be found that benefits both the health professionals and the patients who rely on HCM’s services.
The situation highlights the need for greater commitment from authorities and society as a whole to public health. Adequate investment and a decent working environment are essential to ensure that health professionals can perform their duties effectively and provide quality care to the population.
The strike by resident doctors at HCM is a call to action, not only for the hospital administration, but also for society, which must mobilize around health issues and the well-being of professionals who serve the population.
