On Wednesday, Gorongosa National Park turns 65 (it was officially established as a national park on July 23, 1960), and the zebra stripes have returned. By the early 2000s, many large mammals had disappeared from Gorongosa National Park, but a bold restoration vision was about to take root. Today, Crawshay's zebras—masters of the game of hide-and-seek with their somber stripes—graze on the floodplain. Thanks to our translocation efforts with several partners and our aerial wildlife counts, more than 110,000 large animals now live in Gorongosa National Park.
