Floods in the South threaten the resumption of Maragra for 2026

The floods that recently devastated the provinces of Maputo and Gaza caused not only immediate human and material damage, but also jeopardize one of the region's main industrial reactivation projects: the resumption of production at the Maragra sugar mill, initially scheduled for 2026. The damage to critical infrastructure and crops compromises the timeline and requires additional reconstruction efforts.

At least six thousand hectares of sugarcane fields were flooded or damaged due to the floods that devastated the provinces of Maputo and Gaza. Furthermore, the damage extends to two vital infrastructures for the company's operation: the water pumping system in the field and the protective dike.

According to the source linked to the process, the magnitude of the damage makes it difficult to resume operations at the Maragra Sugar Mill within the initially planned timeframe of 2026. This is because, before any industrial reactivation, a lengthy recovery effort will be necessary: repairing the dike, restoring the irrigation system, and assessing the possibility of replanting the lost sugarcane fields.

Consequently, the project that symbolized the hope for economic revitalization and massive job creation in the Lower Limpopo region now faces a new and serious obstacle. The situation necessitates an urgent reassessment of the timeline and a possible redirection of investments to the emergency phase, which could significantly delay the long-awaited restart of sugar production.
