The central region of Mozambique is facing a high-risk scenario due to the sharp rise in the levels of the Licungo and Revúbuè rivers, following persistent rainfall in recent days. Authorities are warning of the possibility of significant flooding within the next 48 hours, with a direct impact on several riverside communities.
According to the National Directorate of Water Resources Management, hydrological indicators point to a continuous increase in flows, which could reach critical levels at various monitoring points. The forecast is for moderate to high magnitude flooding, especially in low-lying areas prone to cyclical flooding.
In Zambézia province, the districts of Mocuba, Namacurra, and Maganja da Costa are among the most vulnerable. In these areas, the soil is already saturated, increasing the risk of rivers overflowing and communities becoming isolated. There are also preliminary signs of damage to fields and difficulties accessing some roads.
In the province of Tete, the alert focuses on the district of Moatize and the city of Tete, where the Revúbuè River is showing levels above normal. Local authorities have already reinforced surveillance teams and are considering preventive evacuations should the situation worsen.
On the ground, risk and disaster management teams are intensifying monitoring and awareness-raising efforts among the population, focusing on the early removal of belongings and the identification of safe zones. The goal is to minimize losses and ensure a rapid response in case of emergency.
Authorities are urging extreme caution, recommending that the public avoid crossing rivers or flooded areas, strictly follow official guidelines, and be prepared to leave at-risk areas at any time.
With continued rainfall forecast, experts warn that the risk of worsening conditions remains high. The combination of saturated soils and intense precipitation can accelerate the occurrence of floods, increasing the danger to people and property.
In a context of uncertainty, prevention remains the main line of defense. The country is closely monitoring the evolving situation, while authorities maintain a high level of alert.
