At the accommodation center for flood victims in Guara Guara, in the Búzi district of Sofala province, the emergency situation is aggravated by two serious concerns reported by the displaced: food shortages and the occurrence of sexual violence.
On the one hand, those housed there complain about consuming the same food daily, a factor that affects the well-being and morale of families already weakened by the loss of homes and possessions. On the other hand, and more alarmingly, there are reports of outbreaks of rape against women and children within the shelter, creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.
In response to these tensions, the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries, Roberto Albino, who visited the site, appealed for calm within the community. The minister stressed that acts of violence must be combated in an exemplary manner, as they divert the purpose of the site, which at this time is intended to provide shelter and protection to families affected by the floods.
The minister's intervention sought to calm tensions; however, the complaints of the displaced people highlight urgent challenges that go beyond basic humanitarian assistance, requiring specific measures to guarantee safety, especially for women and children, and to diversify the food assistance provided at the center.
