Death due to surgical delay at Vilankulos Hospital

A case of alleged corruption linked to medical negligence at the Vilankulos District Hospital, in Inhambane province, resulted in the death of a 43-year-old man and has generated outrage among his family, who are demanding a thorough investigation by the authorities.

The victim, a resident of Sofala province, was admitted to the health unit on February 10th after suffering a traffic accident. According to family members, the patient's condition was serious and required urgent surgery. However, the procedure was allegedly delayed for five days due to a doctor at the institution demanding an illicit payment.

The family alleges that the healthcare professional conditioned the surgery on a payment of 22,000 meticais, citing a long waiting list and the need to "speed up" the process. After negotiations, the amount was reportedly reduced to 16,100 meticais.

Desperate due to the delay and the seriousness of their relative's condition, the family transferred 15,100 meticais via mobile wallet to the number provided by the doctor. However, even after presenting proof of payment, the surgery was not performed immediately. According to the family, the doctor claimed the amount was insufficient to purchase medication and blood transfusions—supplies that, by law, should be fully covered by the National Health Service.

The surgery eventually took place, but, from the complainants' perspective, it was already too late. The patient did not survive the complications and died. The family attributes the death directly to the delay in treatment and the alleged extortion they were subjected to.

“We have proof of the transfers and all the conversations saved. What we want is justice. We paid to save a life, but we ended up financing the death of our family member,” one of the relatives lamented in statements to the press.

To date, the management of Vilankulos Hospital has not officially commented on the case. Sources in the health sector contacted by our reporting team emphasize that improper billing in public units constitutes a serious disciplinary offense and may constitute a crime, and should be investigated promptly.

Civil society organizations have already reacted, warning that corrupt practices in the healthcare system undermine citizens' trust and, as in this case, put lives at risk. They argue that the episode should be investigated transparently and that those responsible should be punished exemplarily.

The victim's family is now awaiting intervention from the judicial authorities, hoping that the case will not go unpunished and that the death of their loved one will not be just another statistic on the list of victims of negligence and corruption in the country.
