The incessant rain in the southern part of the country is undermining a vital infrastructure: the bridge over the Matola River, which connects Malhapswene to Mulotana. On Monday morning (12), the reality was dramatic. The flow increased so much that the waters literally "swallowed" the structure, making it impassable and turning the crossing into a dangerous challenge.
This collapse was not a complete surprise. Firstly, the river urgently needs dredging to facilitate the normal flow of water; furthermore, according to local sources, the habit of dumping garbage in the riverbed, especially under cover of night, has aggravated the problem, obstructing the passage of water under the bridge. As a result, the force of the water has opened breaches in the sides, creating alternative paths and, worse, accelerating the erosion that reduces the height of the bridge with each flood.
However, the response has been insufficient. Residents report that, despite visits by municipal authorities to the area since 2012, no significant changes have been recorded. The consequences are palpable: this morning, residents of Zilinga, Machau Chau, Zambeze, and Mandzauine were prevented from leaving for their workplaces, becoming isolated.
It is important to highlight that this episode exposes a broader deficiency. The road between Malhapswene and Mulotana desperately needs a solid and safe road, capable of supporting the movement of people and goods. After all, this is a rapidly expanding district, attracting residents from various regions. The bridge over the Matola River is more than just a concrete structure; it is the main artery of a community, and its collapse paralyzes lives and the local economy.
