Bank of Mozambique clarifies: banknotes without serial numbers are genuine, but should be exchanged

The Bank of Mozambique has publicly denied information circulating on social media about an alleged large quantity of counterfeit 2024 Series banknotes in circulation. The monetary authority confirmed that the banknotes are genuine, but have manufacturing defects and should not be in circulation, and can be exchanged free of charge at banks.

The Bank of Mozambique (BM) has become aware, through social media, of allegations regarding the circulation of a large quantity of counterfeit 2024 Series banknotes, supposedly without serial numbers.

However, after conducting expert tests, the Bank of Mozambique clarifies that the banknotes in question are genuine. Despite being authentic, they were deemed unsuitable for circulation due to a printing error in the serial number.

In a statement, the central bank informs that these banknotes remain legal tender. However, it urges citizens who possess them to go to a banking institution, where they can exchange them free of charge. The exchange can be made at the counters of credit institutions authorized to operate in the country.

Meanwhile, the Bank of Mozambique reinforced the importance of properly preserving banknotes and coins. Among the recommendations, it emphasizes that money should be stored in dry and clean places, and that folding, tearing, writing on, stapling, or exposing banknotes to humidity and fire should be avoided. The use of appropriate storage methods is also encouraged.

The Bank of Mozambique concluded its statement by reinforcing its commitment to continue working towards "a stable Metical and a sound and inclusive financial system".
