Absa transforms Khongolote Basic School with potable water after 20 years

In partnership with Rotary's WASH Project, the bank ensures sustainable access to drinking water for 4,000 students, marking the beginning of a profound rehabilitation of the school's teaching and sanitation conditions.

Absa Bank Mozambique has formalized its partnership with Project WASH, an initiative led by the Rotary Club of Maputo Metro that is transforming the lives of approximately 4,000 students at the Khongolote Basic School. This partnership milestone was celebrated on Monday with the completion of the water well, ending more than two decades of lack of this essential resource at the school.

More than just an infrastructural intervention, this first step ensures potable water for the health, hygiene, and dignity of the school community, creating a safer and more conducive learning environment. Absa's commitment, made in April 2025 during a fundraising gala, is thus materialized in a project structured around three pillars: water, sanitation, and complete rehabilitation of the school infrastructure.

“We believe that sustainable development begins in the classroom. By joining this initiative, we are contributing to creating conditions that allow children to learn with dignity, health and safety,” said Tânia Oliveira, Director of Marketing and Corporate Relations at Absa Bank Mozambique. “This project reinforces our commitment to supporting education as a fundamental pillar for the country's growth.”

The ceremony, which was attended by the President of Rotary International, Francesco Arezzo, on an official visit to Mozambique, as well as representatives of the Government and the school community, symbolizes the strategic importance of the partnership for the education sector. The phased implementation of the project aims to ensure a sustainable impact and continuous monitoring of the school's needs.

In this way, by partnering with the WASH Project, Absa Bank Mozambique reinforces its role as an active partner in social development, aligning its corporate citizenship strategy with the principles of inclusion and positive impact. The initiative reaffirms the bank's vision that investing in education is investing in Mozambique's future.
