The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) seized approximately 100 kilograms of cannabis sativa, commonly known as suruma, at a transport terminal in Maputo City. In the same operation, a 38-year-old man, presumed to be the owner of the drugs, was arrested.
According to publicly released information, the substance was packaged in 120 bundles, properly concealed among cargo volumes, and its final destination was the Republic of Malawi. The seizure resulted from monitoring and surveillance work carried out by the authorities as part of the fight against drug trafficking.
Sources connected to the case indicate that the suspect confessed to his involvement in the criminal activity, admitting that he abandoned his job as a driver, a role he held for several years on the route between Mozambique and South Africa, to dedicate himself to drug trafficking. According to him, this would be the third time he had transported narcotics, having received more than 20,000 rand in each operation.
The PRM reaffirms that it continues to intensify control actions in the main transport corridors, road terminals and borders, with a view to stopping trafficking networks that use the national territory as a corridor for the flow of drugs in the southern region of Africa.
The detainee is in police custody and will be brought before the judicial authorities for the appropriate legal proceedings. Meanwhile, investigations are underway to identify other possible individuals involved in the criminal network.
