The Minister of Labor, Gender and Social Action, Ivete Alane, has granted a day off to all public and private sector workers who profess the Muslim faith on March 20, 2026. The measure aims to mark, at the national level, the celebration of Edi-ul-Fitre, one of the most significant dates for the Islamic community.
The decision, announced this week, is based on paragraph 2 of Article 5 of the regulations on public holidays, approved by Decree No. 7/2015 of June 3. The religious holiday marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting and reflection for Muslims.
According to the ministerial decree, the right to suspend work covers all followers of the Muslim religion. However, as stipulated by law, the leave does not automatically apply to all activities. Article 3, paragraph 2 of the same regulation makes an exception for workers whose activities, by their nature, cannot be interrupted. In these cases, the operation of services will be ensured to guarantee the continuity of service to the public and the provision of essential services.
With this initiative, the government reaffirms its respect for religious diversity and ensures the conditions for the Muslim community to celebrate Edi-ul-Fitr with due solemnity and in accordance with its traditions.
