Former presidential candidate, Venâncio Mondlane was accused by the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) last Tuesday (22), of having committed five crimes within the scope of the post-election popular uprising between October and March 2025
Renowned Mozambican politician Venâncio Mondlane publicly responded this week to the charges formally filed against him by the Attorney General's Office (PGR). Mondlane faces five criminal charges: advocating a crime, inciting collective disobedience, publicly instigating a crime, instigating terrorism, and inciting terrorism.
This case takes place in a sensitive political context, marked by protests and allegations of repression, as well as a climate of growing tension between some opposition forces and state institutions. Upon leaving the Attorney General's Office, Mondlane described the case as an "attack on freedom of expression" and claimed to be the target of "political persecution." According to the politician, the charges aim to silence critical voices and intimidate those who dare to question the current system.
Everything happens at a time when talks between Daniel Chapo and Venâncio Mondlane, respectively, seemed to be making significant progress after the handshake and the photo with a view to reaching a mutual solution and well-being.
“The judiciary, the PGR, has been used as an instrument to perpetuate the persecution against Venâncio Mondlane, where numerous civil and criminal proceedings have been instituted against him (…) we are faced with the selective use of the law, where the conformist allies receive privileges and the nonconformists are treated in a draconian way, to bend them, not only on their knees but also in their conscience” he considered.
Mondlane assured that he will continue to fight for citizens' rights and freedoms, calling on youth and civil society to remain steadfast. "Fear has never been our weapon. Truth and justice are," he stated in statements to the media.
Civil society organizations and opposition parties have already expressed concerns about the nature of the process, demanding that it be carried out fairly, transparently, and without political interference.
The case is now in the hands of the justice system and could have significant repercussions on Mozambican politics and the debate on democratic freedoms in the country.
It should be noted that everything is happening at a time when the Frelimo party has been in power for fifty years (50) having participated in several electoral processes that mostly ended in court, which increasingly shows that the Executive Branch has resorted to the Judiciary to perpetuate itself in power, which generates indignation in society to what extent Mozambique is a Democratic country.
