Paulo Vilanculo"
The mayor of Beira, Albano Carige, reaffirms his commitment to girls' education by rewarding female academic excellence with concrete actions. After recently honoring the top graduate of the Catholic University of Mozambique (UCM), Amena, with a 50,000 meticais trophy, the mayor is now offering a six-month paid internship to the top graduate of Licungo University, Suneila Vilanculos, allowing her to apply her knowledge in a practical context and strengthen her integration into the job market.
Suneila Vilanculos stood out among her peers for the excellent results she achieved throughout the course, and now she will have the opportunity to apply her acquired knowledge in a practical context, under the supervision of the Beira municipal administration. The initiative aims not only to recognize the academic efforts of young Mozambican women, but also to provide opportunities for entry into the job market, fostering professional development from an early age. More than academic recognition, this initiative is an opportunity for social transformation.
Inspired by Paulo Freire's liberating pedagogy, Carige understands that education is a path to emancipation and transformation of reality. "Educating a girl is paving the way for a more just, conscious, and participatory society. Liberating knowledge allows our young women to become active agents of change," stated the mayor. Albano Carige reinforced, during the internship award ceremony, that girls' education is an essential pillar for the social and economic transformation of the city and the country. Albano Carige emphasized that investing in the education of young women is investing in the future of the country: "Educating a girl is educating an entire society. Education is not just the acquisition of knowledge, but an instrument of liberation and action on reality. Investing in the education of our young women is investing in the future of our society. "Education is not just the acquisition of knowledge, but an instrument of liberation and action on reality.
"By empowering our girls, we are paving the way for them to become protagonists of social transformation," she stated, emphasizing that such initiatives are strategic to ensure that academic talent is not lost and that young women have a voice and a place in the construction of Mozambique. By supporting outstanding young Mozambican women, the Beira City Council follows Paulo Freire's logic of liberating education, which sees learning as a path to emancipation. For Freire, education means enabling each individual to understand and act on their reality, becoming an active subject of their own story. In fact, investing in girls' education is investing in the education of society as a whole, as educated women transmit knowledge, values, and leadership to the families and communities in which they live, multiplying the social impact. In this sense, Suneila Vilanculos, upon receiving this opportunity, is invited to become an agent of change, capable of positively influencing the society around her.
Education and social development experts consider this gesture a concrete example of local policy focused on gender equality, valuing merit, and promoting active citizenship. For many families, especially in contexts where access to education still faces barriers, this recognition reinforces girls' motivation to persist in their studies and believe in the transformative power of their choices and skills. With this action, the Beira City Council consolidates a trajectory of encouraging academic development and social emancipation, reinforcing the vision that girls' education should not be merely a symbolic priority, but a tangible reality, capable of generating a positive impact on society and the local economy. Demonstrating that concrete educational policies can transform individual talents into agents of collective development and sustainable social change, reinforcing the idea of
