Yango Taxi driver assists in childbirth inside the car on the way to the hospital in Maputo

A Yango Taxi driver became an emergency midwife, helping a passenger safely give birth inside his vehicle during a rushed trip to the hospital in Maputo province. The driver's quick assistance and safe driving were crucial for the successful birth.

Maputo, February 2, 2026 – What began as a simple taxi ride through the Yango app turned into a life-changing moment of overcoming adversity. Alone at home and experiencing strong contractions, Odete Pembele found herself unable to wait for her husband, who was at work. To get to the hospital urgently, she opted to request a ride through the app.

Upon accepting the ride, the driver, Gil Chissaque, quickly realized the seriousness of the situation. Throughout the journey, he remained calm and offered the passenger as much emotional support as possible, ensuring a fast but safe ride. However, the contractions intensified, and while still en route to the hospital, labor became inevitable. With the driver's assistance, Odete gave birth to a healthy baby inside the vehicle.

According to the team at the Nkobe Health Center, the unit to which the mother and newborn were referred, the support provided by Gil throughout the journey was crucial for the safety of both until they arrived at the healthcare facility.

On the one hand, the driver shared his perspective: “When someone requests a ride in a situation like this, it’s because they trust our services. It was an unexpected experience, but thankfully everything went well. I’m grateful to have helped in such a delicate moment,” stated Gil Chissaque.

On the other hand, Odete Pembele highlighted the importance of the assistance she received: “I used the app because I was alone. When we were almost there, the contractions were already very strong and I ended up giving birth in the car. Thank God everything went well.”
