Xenophobia in South Africa: Gaza leads in the number of Mozambican repatriates

In an operation coordinated by the Institute for Disaster Risk Management (INGD), Gaza province is the most impacted by the recent outbreak of xenophobia in South Africa, concentrating 337 of the 545 Mozambican citizens repatriated in this new phase of reception. The victims arrived yesterday at the Ressano Garcia border post.

According to data released by INGD, a multi-sectoral technical team has already been deployed to the district town of Macia, in Gaza, where the repatriated individuals will be received and assisted.

As soon as they crossed the border in Ressano Garcia, the citizens underwent medical screening to assess their health status. They then received a hot meal, and finally, were distributed into vehicles bound for their home provinces.

In addition to the 337 repatriated to Gaza, the contingent includes: 105 for Maputo province, 78 for Inhambane, 17 for Maputo city, and 8 for Manica.

It is important to note that the death toll from these demonstrations has risen to 9.

With this, the authorities are reinforcing psychological and social support for the victims, many of whom lost belongings and housing during the xenophobic attacks recorded in recent weeks in South African cities.
