Waste pickers returned this week to the Hulene landfill in Maputo city, after a week-long strike prompted by a police operation to locate Venâncio Marrengula, accused of leading riots there. The resumption of activities was made possible after a meeting between the pickers and the Municipal Council, which resulted in the definition of new rules, including the elimination of the night shift and the establishment of a single working day, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
During the meeting, the waste pickers pledged to collaborate with the city council and the Municipal Police, reporting suspicious behavior and keeping minors away from the dump. Police presence around the perimeter will be maintained as a preventative measure. The workers thanked the media for highlighting their concerns and called for the creation of a suitable space to store recyclable materials, reaffirming their commitment to a safer and more dignified work environment.
