Venâncio Mondlane faces trial in the Supreme Court for five alleged crimes

The leader of the National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique (ANAMOLA), Venâncio Mondlane, will be brought to trial by the Supreme Court (TS), in connection with the proceedings related to events that occurred during the post-election period of 2024.

The information was revealed by the politician himself on Monday, August 25th, during a live broadcast on his official Facebook page. Mondlane disclosed that he had received a notification from the Supreme Court, in which he is summoned to answer for five alleged crimes.

According to the politician, the accusations include publicly advocating for crime, inciting collective disobedience, publicly inciting crime, inciting terrorism, and inciting terrorism.

The case will be heard by the Supreme Court due to Mondlane's status as a member of the Council of State, which grants him special jurisdiction. Despite the notification, the court has not yet set a date for the start of the trial.

Venâncio Mondlane has ten days to respond to the accusation and present his position regarding the facts attributed to him.

In his response, the leader of ANAMOLA stated that he was prepared to face justice and considered that the trial could be an important step towards clarifying the events that followed the 2024 general elections.

"I think the country must go through this process, this stage, because the facts will speak for themselves. We need to pass this trial by fire," he declared.

Mondlane also believes that the process could be historic, as it involves a former presidential candidate in a legal case related to political activity and the protests that followed the announcement of the election results.

The politician, however, disputes the attribution of responsibility for the violence recorded in the country to the demonstrations. In his interpretation of the events, the actions of the police forces during the protests were decisive in the episodes of violence.

The protests began after Venâncio Mondlane contested the results of the 2024 presidential elections, in which he was the second most voted candidate. Daniel Chapo, the Frelimo candidate, was declared the winner of the election.

The election dispute triggered a wave of protests in different parts of the country. The period was marked by clashes, deaths, looting, and destruction of public and private property, according to several reports on post-election violence.

The case that has now reached the Supreme Court could therefore bring into question not only the accusations made against Venâncio Mondlane, but also the actions of the various participants in the events that marked the post-election period.

While awaiting the scheduling of the trial date, Mondlane must present his defense within the timeframe established by the Supreme Court.
