Tragedy in Pemba: landslide kills pregnant woman, husband, and child

A devastating tragedy shook the city of Pemba, in Cabo Delgado province, in the early hours of Monday (23), when a landslide buried a residence and took the lives of an entire family.

Among the victims are a pregnant woman, her husband, and their young child, who were sleeping at the time of the incident. The collapse occurred in the Cariacó neighborhood, in the Chibuabuari residential unit, catching everyone by surprise and leaving no way out.

According to reports from neighbors, the landslide was caused by soil saturation, after the intense rains that fell during the night of Sunday (22) and continued until the early hours of Monday. The force of the earth gave way suddenly, completely burying the house.

Amidst the scene of grief, two children who were also in the residence managed to survive. They were quickly rescued and taken to Pemba Provincial Hospital, where they are receiving medical care.

This case once again exposes the vulnerability of several residential areas to heavy rainfall, leaving the community in shock at yet another irreparable loss.
