Instead of being disposed of for incineration or recycled for industrial reuse, some of the waste deposited at the Malhapswene landfill is sold, often for public consumption and, in many cases, without the buyers knowing the origin of the products. Waste pickers interviewed by our reporter say that construction materials, meat, and other expired food products are removed from the site for resale.
Allegedly for their survival, the collectors who operate the Malhapswene landfill have selected various products for sale, aware that not all buyers are aware of the origin of the products.
According to our source, who has worked at the dump for over nine years, waste from various sources has been deposited there and is then released through other channels for possible sale. The lack of security at the dumps undermines public health, as waste only passes through and is then released through other channels for sale to residents—a common and natural phenomenon that authorities are skeptical of and unable to stop.
