The everyday mistake with headphones that may be robbing you of your hearing

The use of headphones has become part of the daily lives of millions of people, whether for listening to music, following podcasts, or watching digital content. However, a seemingly harmless habit may be seriously compromising hearing health.

According to hearing specialist Anna Bixler, the main problem lies not only in the amount of time spent using devices, but especially in the volume at which they are used, particularly in noisy environments. In statements to HuffPost, the specialist warns that it is common for people to increase the volume to compete with external sounds.

“When we are in quiet environments, we tend to keep the volume low. But in places like public transport or during outdoor activities, there is a tendency to increase the sound,” he explains.

This behavior can lead to prolonged exposure to high sound levels, increasing the risk of hearing damage over time; in some cases, these changes can become permanent.

To reduce risks, the expert recommends using the noise cancellation function, which helps to reduce ambient sound and avoids the need to increase the volume. Another important measure is to check the device settings in order to limit the maximum sound level.

Besides the improper use of headphones, frequent exposure to environments with loud noises such as bars, nightclubs, and concerts can also affect hearing. Some diseases, often silent, can also compromise hearing ability.

In a context where noise is part of modern life, adopting preventative habits becomes essential for preserving hearing in the long term.
