The province of Cabo Delgado is once again rocked by acts of armed violence perpetrated by terrorist groups. On September 5th and 7th, the district of Mocímboa da Praia was the scene of two attacks that resulted in the deaths of five people, including a teacher and a member of the local police force. Two of the murders were particularly brutal, with the victims being decapitated, causing enormous consternation among the region's residents.
According to district administrator Sérgio Cipriano, the attacks occurred at different times, but demonstrate the terrorist groups' clear persistence in sowing panic and destabilizing local communities. "Unfortunately, we have confirmed five deaths. Among them, we mourn the loss of a teacher who dedicatedly served his community and a member of the local force who fought for the safety of the people," the administrator stated.
Authorities say they are working with defense and security forces on the ground to strengthen surveillance and ensure the protection of the population. Despite these efforts, the attacks highlight the vulnerability of some rural areas, where access is difficult and government presence is limited.
The new episodes of violence revive the climate of fear that has existed since the insurgency began in 2017, which has already resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced people in Cabo Delgado. The affected populations continue to call for peace and security, while the government reiterates its commitment to stabilizing the region, in cooperation with international partners.
