The start of the 10th grade exams at Boquisso Secondary School in Matola was marked by a climate of tension and protest this Monday. However, instead of the usual silence, the school grounds echoed with chants and slogans from the teachers, who decided to begin a strike during the week of assessments.
In fact, the teachers, holding signs and visibly indignant, are protesting against the lack of payment for overtime, claiming that the amounts have been in arrears since 2022. They add that, despite the commitments made, the State has neglected to pay for the additional work performed.
“We are tired of empty promises. We demand that our rights be respected,” stated one of the striking teachers. Furthermore, others reiterated that they will not resume activities until the owed amounts are fully paid.
On the other hand, the situation has generated apprehension among students and parents, who fear disruptions to the normal course of the exams. However, there is still no official statement from the school administration or the Ministry of Education. Nevertheless, the teachers assure that the strike will continue throughout the week if there is no concrete response from the authorities.
