Sweden will end its bilateral development cooperation with Mozambique, gradually closing all support mechanisms. The decision was made public this Friday afternoon by the Swedish Ambassador in Maputo.
Considered one of the main sources of funding for Mozambican projects in the areas of Democracy, Good Governance and Education, this cooperation was, among other things, responsible for covering a large part of Mozambique's hidden debts.
According to an official statement, the Swedish government made the decision on December 4, 2025. The Embassy clarified that the measure is not related to any specific incident, but rather to new challenges posed by the security policies of Sweden's neighboring countries. This strategic reorientation will lead to the progressive dismantling of the support programs currently in place.
The news marks the end of a long-standing partnership, raising questions about the future impact on key sectors that depended on this funding.
