A group of young people accused of embezzling around 500 million meticais from the National Social Security Institute (INSS) last year were released after paying bail, an amount considered negligible given the alleged magnitude of the crime.
The case, which shocked the country due to the volume of public resources involved, had an unusual development: the judge responsible for the case was dismissed before the trial took place. The exact circumstances of this dismissal have not been fully clarified by the judicial authorities. The newspaper Preto e Branco is aware that the dismissal of state officials has been literal.
The disparity between the bail amount and the amount of the alleged embezzlement has raised public questions about the effectiveness of precautionary measures in large-scale financial crimes. Meanwhile, the case awaits the appointment of a new magistrate and the setting of a trial date, leaving the outcome of one of the biggest recent financial scandals in the country in suspense.
