SERNIC detains citizen suspected of insulting the President of the Republic and inciting collective disobedience

A Mozambican citizen was arrested by the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), accused of using social media to disseminate content considered offensive against the President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, former Heads of State and holders of sovereign bodies, as well as promoting alleged messages inciting collective disobedience.

According to SERNIC, the arrests resulted from monitoring and investigating content disseminated on digital platforms, which, according to the authorities, undermines respect for state institutions and public order.

In statements to the press, the institution's spokesperson assured that investigations will continue with the aim of identifying and holding accountable other citizens who may be involved in similar practices.

In turn, the detainee admitted to creating four videos posted on social media and expressed regret for the statements he made. He offered a public apology to the Head of State, stating that he acted in a moment of anger and emotion.

According to him, his reaction was motivated by an incident that occurred in January of this year, during a police intervention, in which he claims to have been hit by a bullet and exposed to tear gas. The citizen also added that other people who were at the scene also produced similar content, but remain at large.

The case remains under investigation, while authorities reiterate their appeal for responsible use of social media and respect for the law when disseminating public content.
