United Nations (New York) –Jamaica's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, welcomed on Wednesday in New York the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2797, which expresses "full support for the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate and conduct negotiations based on the Moroccan autonomy plan, and affirms that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could be one of the most viable solutions."
This position was expressed in a joint statement signed by Ms. Johnson Smith and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita, following talks held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The statement praises the Kingdom of Morocco for its "diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving international consensus and building momentum in favor of the autonomy plan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI."
During their talks, Bourita and Johnson Smith agreed to continue political consultations between the Kingdom of Morocco and Jamaica and to coordinate their positions on issues of common interest.
